Employment Attorneys Amanda Farahany and Ben Barrett Visit Haiti to Improve Quality of Life For Families

In a Haitian village, a little girl is in school instead of hauling water for miles back to her home. A father is working to provide for his family instead of lying in a hospital, suffering from cholera. A mother can cook a meal without worrying that the water she uses will make her children sick.

With the help of nonprofit organizations like Food For The Poor and Water-Life-Hope, as well as volunteer and financial support from companies like Barrett & Farahany, LLP, life-saving water wells are being installed throughout Haiti, providing clean, safe and easily accessible drinking water to those in need.

Since the Haitian earthquake of 2010 destroyed the country’s water system, a system that was already one of the poorest in the world, the lack of clean water has been Haiti’s most urgent public health crisis. Over the past three years, more than 530,000 Haitians have been sickened with cholera and 8,000 have died from the disease because of poor water conditions.

Providing Water To Haitian Families

Understanding how important clean water is to a country’s overall health, Barrett & Farahany, LLP has been a partner to local organizations dedicated to constructing water wells, reservoirs and purification systems. Together, Food For The Poor and Water-Life-Hope have raised more than $500,000 and already installed more than 100 artesian wells in Haiti, each one providing 5,000 Haitians with safe drinking water.

Since 2009 even before the earthquake in 2010, Barrett & Farahany, LLP has helped these organizations here at home and in Haiti. Since visiting Haiti with Food For The Poor in 2011, partner Amanda Farahany has led efforts to raise funds for the organization, volunteered in the country, and spoken publicly on how Americans help the Haiti recover from unbelievable devastation.

In addition, Barrett & Farahany, LLP has hosted charity events to raise money for the installation of a community center in Vialet, Haiti to house a school, church, vocational training facility, and medical service center. In 2012, Farahany traveled to Haiti for the inauguration of the community center built collaboratively by Food For The Poor and Water-Life-Hope as well as a number of several water projects.

“The Haitian people inspire hope in me,” remarked Farahany. “Their daily struggles are so great, and yet they celebrate life with joy and love. And with each visit here, I can see how the Haitians have used our helping hand to lead themselves to the next level of self-sufficiency.”

Barrett & Farahany, LLP will host more charity benefits for the program over the next year, but in the meantime, to donate to recovery efforts in Haiti, visit www.foodforthepoor.org.
